  • WAITING FOR LIGHTNING, a documentary film directed by Jacob Rosenberg and written by Bret, will world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival in Austin, TX this March. To see the trailer, please visit the SXSW site.
  • Ramiro Rodriguez, the highly acclaimed artist who gained an international audience when the band TOOL used several of his images, has done a breathtaking broadside of Bret's story "The End of Summer". There are two limited editions of this relief print broadside: One version is on white stock with a run of 20, and the other is on brown stock with a run of 6.   • Bret's short story "Republican" has won the 2008 Cohen Award from Ploughshares! The Cohen Awards honor the best poem and story published each year in the magazine.
  • Bret's short story "Republican" has been selected by ZZ Packer for inclusion in New Stories from the South: The Year's Best 2008!
  • Bret's new anthology, Naming the World: And Other Exercises for the Creative Writer, is now available for preorders. Random House will release the book in January.
  • The National Book Foundation has named Bret as a winner of a new National Book Award for emerging writers. Adam Haslett, author of You're Not A Stranger Here, selected Bret for the award.
  • Pages Magazine has named Bret as one of "The Next Generation of Literary Lions". Also honored were Zadie Smith, David Mitchell, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Andrew Sean Greer.
  • Bret has received the 2006 Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers from Washington and Lee University.
  • Bret has accepted the Briggs-Copeland Professor of Fiction position at Harvard.
