- Bret's new anthology, Naming the World: And Other Exercises for the Creative Writer, is now available for preorders. Random House will release the book in January.
- The National Book Foundation has named Bret as a winner of a new National Book Award for emerging writers. Adam Haslett, author of You're Not A Stranger Here, selected Bret for the award.
- Pages Magazine has named Bret as one of "The Next Generation of Literary Lions". Also honored were Zadie Smith, David Mitchell, Jonathan Safran Foer, and Andrew Sean Greer.
- Bret has received the 2006 Glasgow Prize for Emerging Writers from Washington and Lee University.
- Bret has accepted the Briggs-Copeland Professor of Fiction position at Harvard.
